The Mongolia Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry met this week with a delegation from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (UNFAO). UNFAO will cooperate with Mongolia Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry and the Mongolia Communications and Information Technology Authority to develop and establish the “Digital Agriculture” system in Mongolia.

Digital Agriculture is a UN backed system utilizing integrated emerging technologies in a systematic way to assist farmers in monitoring crops and agricultural needs to promote efficiencies in food production.

The Digital Agriculture System leverages technology to gather crop growth and output data on a ongoing basis as crops are planted and grow. The data gathered is used to allow farmers make more informed decisions on planting, watering, and fertilizing crops. The system is designed to improve upon traditional farming in which farmers rely on experience and guesswork in managing crops.

Also last week, the General Financing Agreement between the Government of Mongolia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was signed by the Mongolia Minister of Finance and the Head of the Mongolia Unit at the EBRD.

Under the agreement, the EBRD will provide $300 million in credit financing to the government of Mongolia to support projects in road and infrastructure development. The project to first benefit from the financing will be a new two-lane road between Ulaanaatar and Darkhan.

Finally a new thermal power plant has been commissioned this week in Bulgan aimag (province) in north-central Mongolia. The plant will provide 35MW and incorporates advanced technologies including filtration and an automatic control system, to provide Bulgan aimag with reliable power for heating during winter, and is expected to significantly reduce pollution, and save operating expense over the older coal power plants in the area.
